Memories

The series Memories evolved from reflecting on a season of caregiving for elderly loved ones.  The work was guided by spending time with them and observing their struggle to remember simple everyday thoughts as well as sharing the joy of listening to their stories of β€œthe good old days.”  Weekly outings with my father-in-law and wife to reminisce at Kahe Point (a small beach park on low sea cliffs and a dive site in west Oahu) and conversations with my aunt provided inspiration.

Lost memories are made visible through broken lines, distressed and fractured pieces of gold and silver leaf, textures, holes and dangling threads from stretched pieces of hand-beaten paper mulberry fibers. Abstractions of shimmering light on the water and sunlight breaking through the sky suggest cherished memories that give us hope for the days to come.
