POHakALANI

Pohakalani in Hawaiian means the heaven(s) break forth. It is being in the darkness right before dawn, when those first small rays of light and color flash across the sky. It is a dawning, a new day, discoveries and experiences of hope, a blessing from God.

I have discovered a deep blue color in the sky about 30-40 minutes before the sun rises over the horizon. The rising light brings forward a multitude of glows to the sky that shift ever so subtly if you follow them. I never tire of watching the iridescent shimmer on sand as the waves retreat. With each new day I carry these memories into the studio to guide the works one layer per day over many weeks or months, until there’s enough experiences of hope within them to be released.
